Tank Information
Glossary
Sediment depth survey
Sediment depth survey is the investigation of the depth of sediment deposited on top of the tank bed. The tank bed is considered as the hard pan of clay which is above a gravel layer. Soil core sample testing is done to investigate the texture differences at different layers of the tank bed and thereby determine the sediment content.
Water height diagram
Water height diagram gives the storage capacity of the tank at a given depth at the sluice. This diagram provides pre-calculated relationship between the tank bed area and the water height to give the storage capacity between successive elevations. To measure the depth of water a depth gauge is fixed in the tank (usually close to the sluice).
Operational water management charts
Operational water management chart provides details of the water management system and cultivation recommendations for the command area of a particular tank.
Rotational water distribution charts
Rotational water distribution chart provides the schedule of irrigation water supply for the farmer groups under a particular tank.
Preliminary investigation report (PIR)
A PIR gives the basic information of a tank such as location of the tank, infrastructure information (bund, sluice, spill), irrigable extent, etc. and the physical status of the tank and infrastructure at a given time.
Area capacity curve
An area capacity curve describes the capacity corresponding to each elevation level in the tank.
Tank bed survey
Tank bed survey is the investigation of the profile of the tank bed. The sluice level is considered as the zero level. Grid contouring is one of the common methods of investing the tank bed. The result is a contour map of the tank bed.
